In a recent post on his official Facebook page, Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has stirred fresh debate after urging Venezuelans to adopt Islam as a solution to what he described as deep-rooted moral, social and political challenges confronting the South American nation.
Gumi made the remarks while speaking on global inequality, drug abuse and what he termed imperial domination, arguing that Islam offers a comprehensive moral and ideological framework capable of addressing injustice across societies.
“Venezuelans should adopt Islam,” Gumi said. “That will give them the moral rectitude to leave drugs, and the courage to repel the Devil and imperial subjugation.”
According to the controversial cleric, Islam provides a disciplined moral code that can help individuals overcome social vices, particularly substance abuse, while also strengthening societies against foreign domination and exploitation.
Gumi further claimed that Islam stands out as a viable alternative to what he described as a flawed global order marked by double standards and oppression.
Islam remains the only force that is a substitute for the current world’s injustice and hypocrisy,” he stated.
The cleric’s comments come amid Venezuela’s prolonged economic and political crisis, which has been linked to sanctions, internal governance challenges, and widespread poverty.
Gumi suggested that beyond political or economic reforms, moral transformation is essential for lasting change.
His remarks have, however, generated mixed reactions, with critics accusing him of oversimplifying complex geopolitical issues and promoting religious conversion as a political solution.
Others argue that Venezuela’s problems are rooted in structural economic failures and international politics rather than moral or religious orientation.
