Nigeria Set to Receive Another $9.5m Abacha Loot

Nigeria is set to receive $9.5 million (about £7 million) from Jersey in the United Kingdom, linked to stolen funds from former military ruler Sani Abacha.

According to reports, the government of Jersey has agreed to return the money to Nigeria. The funds were kept in a bank account in Jersey and were tied up in court cases for many years.

The money is part of assets said to have been stolen during Abacha’s rule between 1993 and 1998.

Although the funds were first recovered during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, legal battles delayed their return. Progress was made in December 2025 when Jersey’s Attorney-General signed an agreement with Nigerian authorities to allow the money to be sent back.

This new recovery adds to earlier agreements that helped Nigeria get back over $300 million in stolen funds.
