The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning over the sale of unregistered SMA infant formula in Nigeria, following a global recall of Nestlé baby formula across 60 countries.
NAFDAC clarified that Nigeria is not part of the global recall, but stressed that any SMA infant formula sold locally without approved NAFDAC registration numbers is illegal.
✅ Only SMA Products Approved for Sale in Nigeria:
• SMA Gold 1 – NAFDAC No. B1-2783
• SMA Gold 2 – NAFDAC No. B1-2780
• SMA Gold 3 – NAFDAC No. B1-2781
According to the agency, any SMA product outside these approvals should be treated as unregistered and illegal.
❗ Why the Global Recall?
The withdrawn batches were linked to a possible presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, which can cause severe vomiting and nausea. NAFDAC emphasized that this issue does not affect SMA products manufactured for the Nigerian market.

• NAFDAC has deployed zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to monitor distribution channels.
• Consumers are urged to buy infant formula only from authorised outlets.
• Any sighting of unregistered products should be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office or via its online adverse event reporting platforms.
🏭 Nestlé’s Response
Nestlé Nigeria Plc confirmed the global recall (January 5) affecting selected batches of SMA, NAN, BEBA, and Alfamino in 60 countries. The company reiterated that all infant formula officially registered with NAFDAC in Nigeria—including SMA Gold 1, 2 & 3 and NAN Optipro 1, 2 & 3—remain safe and compliant.
