A faction of the Labour Party (LP) loyal to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has welcomed the defection of Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The position was contained in a New Year message issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists by her media office.
In the statement titled “Labour Party Welcomes Peter Obi’s Defection to the ADC”, signed by her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, the faction recalled that it had formally endorsed Obi’s participation in the ADC coalition as far back as May 26, 2025.
Usman explained that Obi’s formal entry into the ADC does not contradict the party’s earlier stance, stressing that the Labour Party has not withdrawn the support previously extended to its former presidential flagbearer.
“Following Peter Obi’s eventual formalisation of his entry into the ADC today, the Labour Party wishes to inform its teeming members across the federation that the party has not withdrawn the initial support extended to its 2023 presidential candidate,” she said.
She further assured party members nationwide that the development poses no threat to the stability of the Labour Party, adding that the leadership remains committed to resisting forces attempting to impose a one-party system on Nigeria.
“We wish to reassure members nationwide that there is no cause for alarm,” Usman added.
The statement signals continued alignment between the LP faction and Obi despite his move to the ADC.
