Former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is reportedly considering a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as opposition leaders intensify talks on a possible coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources say Kwankwaso is in quiet discussions with the ADC alongside members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, amid growing uncertainty over the future of his political structure in Kano. The talks are said to include a potential alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, both 2023 presidential candidates.
The developments follow the reported defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and most members of the Kano State House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has deepened internal rifts within the Kwankwasiyya movement. Kwankwaso is understood to have opposed Yusuf’s defection, which is expected to be formalised in Abuja with senior APC figures in attendance.
Analysts say a successful ADC-led coalition involving Kwankwaso, Atiku and Obi could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics. While the APC currently controls most state governments, opposition leaders appear to be betting that public frustration could reset the political balance ahead of 2027.
The ADC has gained momentum following recent high-profile defections, with party leaders insisting the emerging coalition positions it as a credible challenger to the ruling party in the next election cycle.
