Suspected bandits on Thursday launched a deadly early-morning attack on Unguwar Naino community in Na’alma ward of Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State, killing at least three people and injuring several others.
The attack, SaharaReporters gathered, is coming barely days after another "peace agreement" was reportedly reached in the area.
Local sources said the attackers stormed the community at dawn on January 1, 2026, shooting sporadically and leaving residents in panic.
The assault has renewed fears among villagers who had hoped the recent peace deal would bring an end to repeated attacks.
The incident was first brought to public attention by a Katsina-based social media commentator, @DanKatsna50, who shared details of the attack on X.
He expressed concerns over the recurring violence, questioning whether peace agreements without consistent and visible security presence can effectively end banditry in northwest Nigeria.
Residents of Unguwar Naino were said to have fled their homes during the attack, while the injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Katsina State has remained one of the epicentres of banditry in the northwest, with rural communities frequently targeted despite several peace initiatives and negotiations with armed groups.
The latest attack has further intensified public debate over the effectiveness of peace deals in the absence of sustained security operations, intelligence-led policing, and long-term strategies to protect vulnerable communities.
Efforts to speak with Katsina State Police Command were unsuccessful as the Command's spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, did not take his calls or respond to a text message seeking his reaction over the incident.
