In a recent interview shared by Arise News, the Director General of BigTent Nigeria, Ibrahim Abdulkarim, has warned against a continuation of what he described as elite control over Nigeria’s political leadership, stressing the need for a more accessible and people-focused presidency ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on the evolving dynamics within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the wider opposition space, Abdulkarim argued that Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied with leadership structures that appear distant from the realities faced by citizens.
He noted that public perception in recent years has been shaped by claims that unelected power brokers wield excessive influence over elected leaders, limiting effective governance and accountability.
According to him, the country can no longer afford a system where presidents are insulated from the people they govern. He emphasized that leadership must be visible, responsive, and willing to engage directly with national challenges rather than operate through intermediaries.
Abdulkarim maintained that the growing youth population is especially eager for a break from old political patterns and demands leaders who are transparent and approachable.
Highlighting the stakes ahead of 2027, he stated that the opposition must present candidates who inspire confidence and demonstrate independence of thought and action.
He warned that repeating past mistakes could further erode public trust in democratic institutions.
Abdulkarim concluded by cautioning against any return to governance models perceived as controlled by hidden interests, declaring, “If they said cabal caged Buhari and cabal caged Tinubu then we do not want this story to continue in Nigeria.”
