The world has officially entered an era of “global water bankruptcy.” Rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers are being drained faster than nature can replace them, pushing many water systems beyond recovery.
According to a new report by the UN University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH), decades of overuse, pollution, environmental destruction, and climate pressure have pushed the planet into a dangerous new phase.
The report warns that terms like “water stress” and “water crisis” are no longer enough. Those phrases once served as early warnings — but the future they warned about has already arrived.
This isn’t just an environmental issue.
It affects food security, public health, energy, economies, and global stability.
