The impending industrial action follows the failure of the Federal Government to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the resident doctors in November 2025.
At the time, NARD granted the Federal Government a four-week window to implement agreed demands. The association now says that the deadline has elapsed without meaningful compliance.
Resident doctors had cited poor welfare conditions, unpaid arrears, and training-related challenges as key drivers of the initial strike action.
ARD-FMC OWO had her Emergency General Meeting (EGM) on Friday, January U, 202G, which was presided over by the President ARD FMC OWO, Dr Dada Oluwabusayo Tosin .
According to the association, the strike action when it resumes on Monday will be total and it will only be called off when the U minimum demands are met. The U demands include reinstatement of the unjustly sacked doctors of FTH LOKOJA, payment of salary and promotion arrears of doctors ranging from 3 months to U months, full implement of professional allowance table , clarification of entry level issues etc.
ARD-FMC OWO emphasized its solidarity with NARD and reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare, professional dignity, and working conditions of her members, while urging the Federal Government to act swiftly to avert a breakdown in healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Ogun psychiatric doctors back NARD national strîke
Resident doctors, working at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have declared their support for the resumption of the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, slated to commence from Monday.
Addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the Chairman of the association, Dr. Chidi Ikwumezie, who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Dr. Grace Adeniyi, said the decision to join the strike was reached after an Emergency General Meeting held virtually on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
The decision was announced by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, following what it described as the Federal Government’s continued failure to fully implement the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, reached with the doctors in November 2025, which led to the suspénsion of a 29-day industrial action.
The association lamented what it called the “insincerity and insensitivity” of the Federal Government, noting that more than a month after commitments were made to address key demands, no tangible progress had been recorded.
According to Ikwumezie, “Members unanimously resolved to align with the national body after extensive deliberations on unresolved welfare and professional issues affecting resident doctors nationwide”.
“The ARD of Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, hereby announces its decision to join the resumption of the nationwide strike declared by NARD, effective from 12:00 midnight on Monday, January 12, 2026.
“This decision follows the continued failure of the Federal Government of Nigeria to fully implement the MoU signed with resident doctors in November 2025.”

Some of the demands include “the immediate reinstatement of five resident doctors of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja; payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears; and full implementation of the corrected professional allowance table, with arrears captured in the 2026 Federal Budget”.
LASUTH doctors to join nationwide strike from January 12
The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Association of Resident Doctors has declared full support for the resumption of the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12.
In a statement on Friday, the LASUTH-ARD President, Dr Akerele Alaba, said resident doctors at LASUTH would fully comply with the directive of the national body to resume the Total Indefinite and Comprehensive Str!ke 2.0, tagged ‘No Implementation, No Going Back’.
Akerele recalled that NARD embarked on a nationwide str!ke on November 1, 2025, which was suspended on November 29, 2025, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government on November 27, 2025.
According to him, the agreement covered 19 demands expected to be implemented within one month.
“The Federal Government has failed to fulfil its part of the agreement. Many of the items have been completely neglected, altered, or only partially implemented,” he said.

He disclosed that the decision to resume the str!ke followed resolutions reached at NARD’s Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, held virtually on January 2, 2026.
Akerele emphasised that the NEC would only consider suspending TICS 2.0 after the full implementation of key minimum demands, including the reinstatement of the FTH Lokoja Five, payment of promotion and salary arrears, full implementation of the professional allowance table with arrears captured in the 2026 budget, reintroduction of the specialist allowance, resolution of house officers’ salary delays, and the resumption of the Collective Bargaining Agreement process.
The LASUTH-ARD president also highlighted several unresolved local welfare concerns affecting resident doctors in Lagos State.
These include the abandonment of the resident doctors’ quarters project, unpaid advancement arrears, exclusion of resident doctors from housing and pension schemes, non-payment of teaching allowances to registrars and house officers, and the unpaid December 2025 bonus.
He called on the Lagos State Government to ensure the timely payment of the 2026 medical residency training fund, while appreciating the state government for its consistent yearly payment of the fund.
Akerele also appealed to the Lagos State Government to address the issues, stressing that the str!ke decision, though difficult, was taken in the collective interest of doctors’ welfare, dignity and the sustainability of healthcare delivery nationwide.
He added that resident doctors at LASUTH were currently rendering full services but would comply with the strike directive once it takes effect.
