US President Donald Trump has said Cuba is close to falling following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces.
Trump spoke to journalists aboard Air Force One late Sunday, a day after US troops arrested Maduro and his wife over alleged narco-terrorism charges.
According to Trump, Cuba can no longer depend on Venezuela for oil, security and financial support, adding that Maduro’s removal has weakened Cuba’s position in the region.
When asked if the US plans to take action against Cuba, Trump said there may be no need for military action, insisting the country is already collapsing on its own.
Meanwhile, the arrest of Maduro has caused tension across the region, with protests and strong diplomatic reactions.
Cuban authorities accused the United States of violating Venezuela’s sovereignty and have called for public rallies in support of Caracas.
US officials also claimed that Cuban security operatives helped sustain Maduro’s government, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio alleging that Cuban agents controlled key parts of Venezuela’s intelligence and security system.
