Recent developments in Venezuela’s airspace have ripped the curtain off years of loud claims surrounding Chinese made radar systems and their supposed ability to neutralize advanced United States stealth aircraft. For years Caracas has leaned heavily on a mix of Russian and Chinese air defense technology including the JYL 1 JY 11B and the much hyped JY 27 VHF radar which Beijing markets as an anti stealth game changer capable of detecting aircraft like the F 22 and F 35 at extreme ranges.
Venezuela’s military and Chinese aligned media have long celebrated these radars as proof that American stealth is overrated. Past claims included alleged detections of F 22 fighters in 2020 and repeated assertions that F 35 aircraft were tracked over Venezuelan airspace in late 2025 complete with precise speed and altitude figures. None of these claims were independently verified but they were aggressively pushed to project the image of Chinese technology as a stealth killer and a strategic equalizer against the United States.
That narrative collapsed spectacularly in early January 2026 when U.S. forces launched a rapid and overwhelming operation that tore through Venezuela’s integrated air defense network. Within minutes key radar sites and surface to air missile systems including Russian S 300 variants linked with Chinese sensors were reportedly neutralized jammed or destroyed. Stealth aircraft operated freely while electronic warfare cyber operations and suppression of enemy air defense tactics left Venezuela’s radar picture blind and confused.
Far from detecting and deterring U.S. aircraft the much praised Chinese radars were either knocked offline or rendered useless almost immediately. Longstanding issues compounded the failure including poor maintenance lack of spare parts and degraded readiness caused by Venezuela’s economic collapse. By mid 2025 multiple reports already suggested that more than half of the country’s Chinese supplied radar assets were non operational even before the fighting began.
The harsh reality is that while VHF radars like the JY 27 may theoretically detect stealth aircraft under ideal conditions detection alone does not translate into effective combat power. These systems struggle with accuracy cannot provide reliable fire control data and are highly vulnerable to jamming deception and anti radiation attacks. In a real high intensity conflict against a technologically superior adversary they become prime targets rather than silver bullets.
What unfolded over Venezuela is a brutal reminder that propaganda does not stop bombs and brochures do not win wars. Chinese radar systems are not magical stealth erasers and no single piece of hardware can stand alone against modern combined arms warfare. The events of January 2026 exposed the gap between marketing claims and battlefield reality and delivered a clear message to every military betting on paper capabilities over real world readiness.
The myth of invincible anti stealth radars has taken a serious hit and Venezuela has paid the price for believing it.
