The office and armoury of the Mobile Police 13 (Mopol 13) unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, were on Sunday gutted by fire.
An eyewitness told journalists that the fire, which started around 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, destroyed several office rooms and the armoury section.
The police facility was engulfed in flames, with the office buildings and armoury completely razed to ashes.
The eyewitness, who spoke to journalists at the scene of the incident but did not want his name in print, explained that the fire started from one of the offices.
“I was on morning duty and at about 10 a.m. or thereabout, I saw smoke emanating from the Squadron Commander’s office.
“I tried to inquire, then the next thing I saw was heavy flames from the Squadron Commander’s office. Everything got burnt.
“I quickly called my boss, who later called the fire service. But before the fire officials could arrive, the whole place had been engulfed by fire,” he said.
Although the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the command has confirmed the incident.
The command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, who confirmed the incident, promised to get back to journalists.
She said, “Yes, I am aware of the fire outbreak at the Mopol 13 facility in Makurdi, but I will get back to you.”
