A woman has accused officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State of brutality, unlawful search and detention during a Christmas Eve watch night on December 24, alleging she was placed in a male detention cell after being arrested.
In a statement shared on Wednesday, the woman said she was stopped and searched by police officers, during which a gun was allegedly pointed at her.
According to a post made by a blogger gistreel, the lady claimed she fled in fear, was chased, choked and eventually arrested. According to her, officers detained her without explanation and confined her in a cell meant for male suspects.
“I never thought I would be a victim of police brutality until it happened to me,” she said, describing the experience as traumatic and degrading, especially on the eve of Christmas.
She further alleged that her rights were violated, insisting there was no lawful basis for the search or detention. The incident has sparked outrage online, with calls for an investigation and accountability from the police authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had not issued an official response to the allegations. Civil society groups have urged the police to probe the claims and ensure justice if the allegations are substantiated.
