In an interview with Daily Independent on Sunday, December 7, 2025, Chief Martin Onovo, former presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP) and Head of Policy Positions at the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), has commented on the state of Nigeria’s opposi8tion parties.
Onovo said that all authentic opposition parties in the country have been weakened over time.
He explained that the weakening is due to actions by the current ruling party, which he described as dictatorial, corrupt, and lawless.
Onovo accused key figures of undermining opposition parties for personal and political interests.
He specifically mentioned Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, claiming that Wike acts against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite being a member.
Onovo described him as a “hatchet man” targeting the PDP.
He said Wike was involved in the crisis that shook Rivers State in the past and was also accused of plotting against the Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr. Dan Nwanyanwu.
Onovo also raised questions about the personal wealth of Wike’s family, noting that the source of the mansions owned by his children in Florida, USA, remains unexplained.
He added that Wike has recently started meeting with the former Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Abure, suggesting political maneuvering outside the PDP.
“All authentic opposition parties in Nigeria have been severely weakened by the subversion sponsored by the dictatorial, corrupt and lawless ruling party. Mr. Wike, an All Progressives Congress (APC) man in PDP clothing, is the hatchet man for the attack against the PDP,” he said.
