Everton manager David Moyes has called on European clubs to show full respect for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite the long-standing tensions surrounding the tournament’s scheduling.
AFCON has often been a point of friction between European clubs and African football authorities, especially over the release of players during the club season. However, FIFA recently eased the rules ahead of the 2025 AFCON, reducing the mandatory player release period from two weeks to one week before the tournament begins.
Everton are expected to feel the impact of the competition, with Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye set to miss club duties while representing their national teams. Still, Moyes made it clear he has no intention of blocking their participation.
“We have to respect completely the Africa Cup of Nations,” Moyes said during a press conference on Friday, December 12.
“The players will go to play in the tournament for their countries, and rightly so. It’s a great thing they get selected for their countries, and we hope they do well.”
The Everton boss’ comments signal a conciliatory and respectful approach, recognising AFCON as a major global football tournament that deserves the same respect as any other continental competition.
