Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, has reacted to the US visa ban and travel restrictions placed on Nigeria and 18 other countries by former US President Donald Trump.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Moghalu said foreign policies should be judged based on national interest, not emotions or morality.
He explained that Trump’s decision was made in line with what the United States believes is best for its security and national interest, whether people agree with it or not.
According to Moghalu, every country has the right to protect its borders and decide who enters, especially when issues of security and illegal migration are involved.
He urged Nigerians and Africans to look inward and focus on solving internal problems such as insecurity, terrorism, bad governance, and weak borders, instead of blaming foreign countries.
Moghalu made it clear that he was not defending corrupt leaders, whom he described as “economic terrorists,” but speaking for ordinary citizens who want safety, stability, and a better future.
He also welcomed the clarification by the US Embassy in Nigeria, describing it as reasonable from the US point of view.
The former CBN deputy stressed that Nigeria’s failure to fix its internal challenges does not give citizens automatic access to other countries.
He said real change must start from Nigerians standing up against bad leadership at home.
Recall that the US visa restrictions, which will take effect from January 1, 2026, include partial suspension of tourist, student, exchange, and some immigrant visas. Nigeria is among 19 affected countries, sparking widespread debate nationwide.
