Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, Aminu Tambuwal, has clarified that the recent airstrike by the United States in collaboration with Nigerian forces against ISIS-affiliated terrorists targeted Tangaza Local Government Area, not Jabo in Tambuwal Local Government as widely reported.
Speaking on the recent military operation against ÎSIS terrorists in Sokoto State in an interview with Arise TV, Tambuwal revealed that he had been briefed by top security officials regarding the actual location of the joint U.S.-Nigeria airstrike.
I have been in touch with the topmost of security forces in Nigeria and the information I got was that the target was actually not Jabo in Tambuwal local government but an enclave in Tangaza local government of Sokoto state which of course is not part of my senatorial district," he stated.
According to Tambuwal, the Lakurawa threat is not new to Sokoto State, having previously manifested in particular local government areas. "I recollect that while serving as governor of Sokoto state we have had issues of Lakurawa in the same sub area of Sokoto, in particular Tangaza and Gudu and to some extent Binji local government area of Sokoto state," he explained.
Tambuwal emphasized that the coordinated military response during his governorship achieved significant results, forcing the terrorîsts group to retreat from the affected areas.
"We carried out through in the joint operations with the army, DSS and other security forces very effective and coordinated operation against Lakurawa and they were pushed back and not much was heard from them up until recently, in about last year or a year ago," he added.
