Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has voiced serious concerns about the increasing influence of elite groups within Nigeria’s federal administration, cautioning that their dominance poses a threat to the country’s democratic integrity and economic stability.
His remarks were reported by Symfoni TV on Friday, December 26, 2025, during a broadcast discussion on national governance and policy.
Okonkwo argued that a small circle of powerful individuals has gained disproportionate control over key aspects of the state, sidelining the broader population in decisions that affect national welfare.
He claimed that these factions manipulate policy decisions, extract benefits from national resources, and enrich themselves while the majority of Nigerians struggle with economic hardship and insecurity.
In a vivid metaphor to describe the situation, Okonkwo stated, “Six cabals are sucking Nigeria dry like children feeding endlessly on their mother.” Through this comparison, he highlighted what he perceives as systematic exploitation of the country’s wealth, warning that such unchecked practices could inflict long-term damage on the nation’s economy and social fabric.
The ADC leader expressed concern about the declining standards of governance, noting that transparency and accountability are being steadily eroded.
He argued that state finances are frequently used without proper oversight, while regulatory institutions tasked with enforcing fiscal discipline are being undermined or weakened.
The result, he said, is widespread hardship for ordinary citizens, characterized by rising living costs and persistent security challenges.
Okonkwo further linked the concentration of power among elite circles to a deterioration of Nigeria’s democratic principles.
He observed that political opponents and critics face harassment, and state institutions are often allegedly employed to suppress dissent. According to him, democracy cannot function properly when authority is monopolized by a narrow, self-serving group.
He cautioned that continued neglect of these structural issues could lead to enduring damage to the republic. Mismanagement of national resources for the benefit of a select few, he argued, not only stalls national progress but also undermines public confidence in elected representatives.
Calling for heightened civic engagement, Okonkwo urged Nigerians to scrutinize governance processes and demand transparency from leaders.
He emphasized that public office exists to serve the community rather than individual agendas. While acknowledging the importance of voting, he stressed that citizens must go further by actively defending the integrity of their electoral choices and challenging systemic unfairness wherever it occurs.
