RSHA: This Is the First Time I’ve Seen Legislators Telling the World What They Stand For - Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has praised members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for boldly standing by their principles and openly declaring their position on issues affecting Rivers State and Nigeria.

In a post shared by Lere Olayinka via X, Wike gave the commendation during a visit to the lawmakers at the Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt. He described their actions as courageous, saying it is rare to see legislators clearly state what they believe in and remain firm despite pressure and challenges.

According to him, the lawmakers have shown that the legislature is an independent arm of government and not a department under the control of anyone. He noted that their support for President Bola Tinubu and their insistence on doing what they believe is right have earned them respect across the country.

The former Rivers State governor criticized the decision that led to the withholding of the lawmakers’ salaries and allowances before the declaration of a state of emergency. He said denying elected representatives their entitlements because of political disagreements is wrong and against democratic principles.

Wike also appreciated the families of the lawmakers, especially their spouses, for standing with them during difficult times. He explained that family support plays an important role in helping leaders remain strong and focused.

In his words, “This is the first time I have seen legislators telling the world what they stand for and standing firm, and that we are a different arm of government. Not a department of government.”
