FCT Minister Nyesom Wike expressed that the departure of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) impacted him personally. He noted that these lawmakers, who are his supporters, switched parties without informing him.
In a video posted by Symfoni TV, Wike mentioned that he had previously urged the PDP National Chairman to maintain party unity and organization to prevent members from defecting to other parties.
Wike stated, “I want to thank you, Mr. Speaker, even though it personally affected me with 17 of you moving to APC without consulting me, while 10 other members remain. This is why I’ve advised my national chairman to keep the party organized so that our adversaries do not recruit our members.”
Wike explained that the defection of the lawmakers highlighted deeper internal challenges within the PDP, stressing that poor communication and lack of cohesion often weaken political parties. He said the movement of the legislators to the APC was a clear signal that party leaders must be more proactive in addressing grievances and strengthening internal structures. Despite expressing personal disappointment, Wike maintained that he held no grudges against the lawmakers, noting that political decisions are often influenced by prevailing circumstances.
