Former presidential candidate and ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi has publicly criticised the Federal Government for failing to pay local contractors, despite Nigeria’s reported revenue growth in 2025.
In a statement issued on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed concern over the widespread protests currently erupting across Abuja and several regions, where contractors have taken to the streets demanding payment for certified projects completed in 2024 and 2025.
🔍 Obi’s Concern
Obi questioned how a government that claims improved revenue performance is still unable — or unwilling — to settle those who delivered critical infrastructure projects nationwide.
He warned that:
• Non-payment weakens investor confidence
• Halts ongoing infrastructure work
• Hurts local businesses and jobs
• Undermines public trust in government accountability

For months, local contractors have raised alarms over delayed payments, saying the backlog has pushed many into debt, forced layoffs, and stalled multiple federal projects.
