Nigeria’s fragile electricity system suffered another nationwide collapse on Monday afternoon, throwing homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across the country into thick darkness.
Distribution load data released at 3:12pm showed power supply dropping to near-zero levels nationwide. Reports from the Distribution Companies (Discos) revealed that only two Discos were receiving electricity at the time:
• Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) – 30MW
• Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) – 20MW
All other Discos — Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola — recorded zero megawatts.
📉 Total electricity distributed nationwide stood at just 50MW, a figure far below normal operational capacity, signaling one of the most severe power disruptions in recent years.
The collapse triggered a widespread blackout, severely disrupting households, businesses, hospitals, and other essential services that rely on stable power supply.
As of Monday evening, efforts to restore the grid were said to be ongoing. However, no official explanation or restoration timeline has been provided by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or the Federal Ministry of Power.
