Nigeria has recalled the fighter aircraft earlier deployed to Benin Republic following confirmation that Sunday’s sudden coup attempt has been successfully contained.
The jets, sent from Lagos for aerial surveillance, were ordered back after intelligence indicated loyalist forces had regained full control of Cotonou — with no immediate security threat to Nigeria. According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the attempted takeover of President Patrice Talon’s government was swiftly foiled.
The chaos began when mutineers launched an early-morning attack on the president’s residence. When that failed, they stormed the national broadcaster, ORTB, attempting to seize state TV and declare a military takeover.
Benin’s security forces moved in immediately — surrounding the station and blocking escape routes — as negotiations continued with those still barricaded inside.
Interior Minister Alassane Seidou confirmed that the situation is under control and that President Talon remains safe. The coup plotters, identifying themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation” and reportedly led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, had briefly announced that borders were closed and political activities suspended.
Authorities say all democratic institutions remain intact.
West Africa, however, faces rising instability, with this failed plot adding to growing concerns over the region’s democratic future.
