Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, born on 4 February 1958, is a Nigerian lawyer, politician, and respected traditional title holder. He is widely recognized for his pioneering role in the political development of Ekiti State and for his contributions to Nigeria’s economic governance. He served as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from August 2019 to May 2023, where he oversaw national policies aimed at boosting industrial growth, improving the business environment, strengthening trade relations, and attracting both local and foreign investment.
Adebayo made history as the first democratically elected Governor of Ekiti State. He assumed office on 29 May 1999 following Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule under the Fourth Republic. He was elected on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy, a party that dominated politics in the southwest during the early years of the democratic era. His tenure as governor ran until 29 May 2003. During this period, he focused on infrastructural development, administrative reforms, and initiatives to lay the foundational structures of the young state, which had only been created in 1996. His leadership is often credited with promoting stability and establishing a governance framework that shaped the trajectory of Ekiti’s development.
Before entering elective politics, Adebayo built a professional career in law. He studied at the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar, after which he practiced law in the private sector. His background in legal practice enhanced his approach to governance, particularly in areas of public administration, policy formulation, and institutional development.
As Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adebayo collaborated with both domestic and international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base. His work supported the expansion of small and medium enterprises, encouraged manufacturing investments, and promoted export development through economic diversification programs. His ministry also played a key role in Nigeria’s participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Beyond his official roles, Adebayo holds the prestigious traditional title of Otunba, which reflects his social influence and cultural significance within Yoruba society. He has remained an important figure in Nigerian political and economic discourse, known for his calm leadership style, administrative competence, and commitment to national development.
