The 2025 Eyo Festival lit up Lagos Island on Saturday as many gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square to witness one of the state’s most revered cultural spectacles.
The iconic festival, also known as Adamu Orisha Play, was last celebrated eight years ago.
Dating back to 1854, it honours the passing of prominent Lagos indigenes, including traditional rulers and other illustrious indigenes who made significant contributions to the development of the state.
Clad in flowing white agbada-like robes, wide-brimmed hats, and carrying their symbolic staffs known as opambata, the Eyo masquerades moved in grand processions through major streets on Lagos Island.
This year’s edition was held in honour of several notable figures, including Abibatu Mogaji, a revered market leader and mother of President Bola Tinubu; Lateef Jakande, Lagos’ first civilian governor; Mobolaji Johnson, the state’s first military administrator; and Michael Otedola.
