Popular human rights activist and founder of the Safe City Volunteer Foundation, Harrison Gwamnishu, has finally spoken publicly following his release on bail from police custody in Edo State, clarifying circumstances surrounding his detention and ongoing investigation.
In a detailed statement and accompanying video shared on social media on Monday, Gwamnishu expressed deep appreciation to supporters across the country and addressed widespread speculation about his arrest. He stated clearly that he was neither invited nor forcibly arrested by the police, but rather presented himself voluntarily as a law-abiding citizen to assist with investigations related to the matter.
According to him, he has not been formally charged with any offence, as the case remains under review by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP). He emphasized that his cooperation was driven by respect for the rule of law and confidence in the justice system, urging the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
Gwamnishu also extended heartfelt gratitude to his legal team, including Barrister Olayiwola Afolabi (SAN), Barrister Dele Igbinedion, and Barrister Favour Ajuebor, for their professionalism and tireless efforts in securing his release on bail. He acknowledged the support of friends, volunteers, and well-wishers who stood by him throughout the period.
Despite being widely known for his strong stance against police misconduct and human rights abuses, the activist commended the Edo State Commissioner of Police for what he described as professionalism and maturity in handling the matter. He further praised the investigation team led by CSP Osagie, noting that he was treated with care, respect, and what he described as “fatherly guidance” during his time in custody.
The case stems from allegations surrounding the handling of funds raised through public donations to secure the release of a kidnapped couple abducted on November 22, 2025, near Aviele in the Auchi area of Edo State. While the pregnant wife was later released, controversy arose over claims that part of the ransom money, reportedly ₦5.4 million out of ₦20 million raised, was unaccounted for, leading to public outrage and police involvement.
Gwamnishu’s legal representatives have maintained that the funds in question were part of a tracking strategy and were voluntarily handed over to the authorities. The situation attracted further attention following claims by social media commentator VeryDarkMan, who alleged responsibility for pushing the case into the public space.
An Edo State High Court granted Gwamnishu bail on December 19, 2025, pending the outcome of the DPP’s review. In his statement, the activist stressed restraint and gratitude, promising to personally thank supporters while allowing the legal process to run its full course.
As reactions continue to trail the development, opinions remain divided, with supporters praising his transparency and years of advocacy, while critics urge a thorough and unbiased investigation. For now, the matter remains with the DPP, as many await the next legal step in a case that has captured national attention.
