The political conflict between Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has escalated into a public and highly personal confrontation, revealing deep fissures within the opposition ranks.
The dispute originated from Fayose’s appearance on a television program where he accused Governor Makinde of secretly receiving N50 billion in federal relief funds following the Bodija explosion in Ibadan, while publicly opposing President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda. Makinde’s camp swiftly denied the allegation, clarifying that only N30 billion was approved and disbursed, with detailed public accounting for its use in victim compensation and reconstruction.
In a blistering counterattack, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State aligned with Governor Makinde, known as Oyo PDP-Visionaries, issued a scathing statement targeting Fayose’s credibility and motives. The group did not merely contest the financial claim but launched an ad hominem assault, framing Fayose as a mercenary actor in a larger proxy war.
They explicitly tied his criticism to the ongoing feud between Makinde and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The statement declared, "Mr Fayose went on air, motivated by what he could benefit from Nyesom Wike, the drunken emperor of Rivers, to deride Governor Makinde.
This incendiary characterization labels Wike a "drunken emperor" and reduces Fayose’s intervention to a venal transaction, alleging he was hired to damage Makinde’s reputation.
The group further mocked Fayose’s intellectual capacity, dismissing his understanding of official documents as "half-education" and stating that the letter he presented as proof only showed a request for funds, not an approval or disbursement.
They described his conduct as shameless and warned him to desist before bringing further disgrace to himself and the state he once governed. This response transforms the debate from a factual dispute over fund allocation into a theatrical clash of personalities, complete with insults and allegations of corruption.
