A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of former Attorney‑General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), along with his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and one of his wives, Bashir Asabe, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The order was issued on today Tuesday, 30 December 2025, by Justice Emeka Nwite, who directed that the trio remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of their bail application.
Malami and his co‑defendants were arraigned on a 16‑count charge of alleged money laundering filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
They pleaded not guilty to all counts when the charges were read to them in court.
The charges allege that the defendants conspired to conceal, retain and disguise proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to several billions of naira, including through companies and bank accounts, and acquired high‑value properties in Abuja, Kano and other locations.
Justice Nwite declined the defence’s oral bail application on the grounds that a formal application had been filed in writing and that the prosecution should be given an opportunity to respond. Proceedings were adjourned to 2 January 2026 for the hearing of the bail application.
The remand marks a significant development in one of Nigeria’s high‑profile financial crimes cases involving a former senior government official.
