Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has suggested that the failed coup attempt in Benin Republic may have been used as a political strategy by President Patrice Talon.
Sowore, reacting on his X handle on Sunday, said there are signs that President Talon might have known about the plot and allowed it to play out in order to clamp down on opposition voices and divert public attention from rising criticism of his leadership.
He explained that instead of being a genuine attempt to overthrow the government, the situation may have been a calculated move to weaken the opposition and strengthen political control.
Sowore stressed that he completely opposes military rule, saying coups whether real or staged are never a solution to political problems. According to him, the true answer lies in accountability, strong public engagement, and real democratic reforms.
He also compared the Benin incident to the recent situation in Guinea-Bissau, noting that both events seem to follow a similar pattern where political leaders allegedly use instability to stay in power or prevent democratic transition.
Sowore warned that such tactics are dangerous for democracy and urged citizens across Africa to continue demanding good governance through peaceful and democratic means.
