A public affairs analyst, Adekunle Adebayo, has raised concern over an alleged plan to arrest and intimidate top opposition politicians in Nigeria.
According to Adebayo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex–Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai are among those reportedly being targeted.
He also claimed that other well-known political figures, including Isa Ali Pantami, Rauf Aregbesola, and Kashim Ibrahim Imam, may be affected by the alleged plan.
Adebayo said the move is part of a wider effort to weaken opposition politics and turn Nigeria into a one-party state. He linked the claim to earlier arrests and detentions of former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Anambra governor Chris Ngige, and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami.
He warned that such actions, if carried out, would go against Nigeria’s constitution, especially citizens’ rights to freedom, equality before the law, and fair justice.
Adebayo called on Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to closely watch the situation, warning that democracy is at risk if opposition voices are silenced.
