Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina, born on 6 February 1960, is one of Africa’s most distinguished economists and development leaders. At 65, he continues to embody visionary leadership, innovation, and dedication to Africa’s progress.
A native of Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria, Adesina’s journey began from humble beginnings. His father and grandfather were farm labourers, and his early life was shaped by the realities of rural hardship. Yet, from those modest roots, he cultivated a deep passion for agriculture and economic development—a passion that would later define his life’s work and global reputation.
Adesina attended the University of Ife, now known as Obafemi Awolowo University, where he graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Agricultural Economics in 1981. His brilliance earned him a scholarship to Purdue University in the United States, where he completed his Master’s degree in 1985 and his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 1988. His doctoral thesis was recognised as the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis of his year at Purdue.
Dr. Adesina’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to transforming agriculture and development in Africa. He worked in several international organisations before returning to Nigeria, where he served as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2011 to 2015. During his tenure, he introduced landmark reforms such as the electronic wallet system for farmers, which ended years of corruption in fertiliser distribution and empowered millions of rural farmers.
In 2015, Adesina was elected as the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), becoming the first Nigerian to hold that position. His leadership has since been defined by major initiatives aimed at powering, feeding, industrialising, and integrating Africa. His bold reforms have strengthened the AfDB’s reputation as one of the most effective development institutions in the world. He was re-elected for a second term in 2020, a testament to his success and the trust placed in his leadership across the continent.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Adesina is also a devoted family man. He is married to Dr. Grace Adesina, and together they have two children, Rotimi and Segun. His family remains a strong pillar of support throughout his journey of public service and international leadership.
In 2025, Dr. Adesina was honoured with the “Man of the Year Africa” award at the 7th Annual EMY Africa Awards in Accra, Ghana. The award recognised his leadership at the African Development Bank and his exceptional contributions to the continent’s development. In response, he expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to serving Africa with selflessness and integrity.
