The UK government is under fire after Hadush Kebatu, an Ethiopian migrant and convicted s3x offender, was reportedly paid £500 to leave Britain — just days after being mistakenly released from prison instead of transferred to immigration custody.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the payment, calling the situation a “blunder that should never have happened.” Kebatu, who illegally entered the UK by boat in June, had been jailed for assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman, sparking protests in Essex.
Following his accidental release from HMP Chelmsford, Kebatu was re-arrested after a two-day manhunt and later deported to Ethiopia under heavy escort. Officials said the payment was made to “avoid costlier delays” after he threatened to disrupt the deportation flight.
Critics slammed the move as “an absolute disgrace”, accusing the government of rewarding criminal migrants. Deputy PM David Lammy has ordered an independent inquiry, while opposition MPs warn the case exposes deep flaws in the UK’s immigration and deportation system.
