Mass protests have erupted across Tanzania following the October 29 election, as early results show President Samia Suluhu Hassan taking a strong early lead.
Crowds in Dar es Salaam and several other cities have taken to the streets, accusing the government of unfair elections after leading opposition figures were barred from running. Security forces have imposed a curfew, deployed the military, and cut internet access in some regions.
Opposition supporters say the vote was “predetermined,” while human rights groups are raising alarm over arrests, media crackdowns, and reports of missing activists.
Despite the tension, President Samia’s supporters maintain that the process was legitimate and reflect “the will of Tanzanians.”
Observers warn the situation could worsen if dialogue isn’t opened soon — making this one of Tanzania’s most tense elections in recent years.
