Ghanaian nurses will now be working the Caribbean as part of a new Labour Mobility agreement between Ghana and Grenada.
The initiative, announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, will allow trained Ghanaian nurses to work in Grenada, a move that symbolizes the strengthening of ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
Sharing the news on social media, Ablakwa described the development as “a significant step” in Ghana’s international labour partnerships.
He revealed that twenty more similar agreements are currently under negotiation with other countries, hinting at a broader plan to expand opportunities for skilled Ghanaian workers abroad.
“All set for Ghanaian nurses to work in Grenada,” he wrote. “Twenty more labour mobility agreements with other countries are currently under negotiations.
"We are also holding strategic talks to establish the first ever direct flight between Africa and the Caribbean.”
Ablakwa’s remarks followed the official visit of Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell to Ghana, during which both nations reaffirmed their shared history and cultural connections.
According to Ablakwa, the visit underscored a deep ancestral bond between the two countries, one that goes beyond politics and trade.
“Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced that his DNA tracing proves he has Ghanaian ancestry; it is now confirmed that 75% of the people of Grenada have ancestral links to Ghana,” the minister shared.
He also drew parallels between the political landscapes of both nations, noting that their ruling parties are coincidentally named the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“The two NDCs secured two-third majorities in the last round of parliamentary elections,” he added, emphasizing that both returned to power with landslide victories after losing two previous elections.
