FG unveils FUTA Teaching Hospital


The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially unveiled a Teaching Hospital for training and research activities for medical allied students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA. The hospital located in the centre of Akure is sequel to the release of the erstwhile State Hospital, Akure owned by the Ondo State Government with an upgrade of facilities therein to meet the demands and standard of a befitting teaching hospital of its kind in the country.

At the formal signing of the instruments of transfer and handover Minister of Health and Coordinating t Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali-Pate (CON) said “it is with deep humility and sense of responsibility that I am here today on behalf of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), to unveil this important facility for the use of training of our medical students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. The President gave instruction months ago that the ministry should collaborate with all stakeholders, including Ondo state government to ensure this feat is achieved. We at the ministry quickly set machinery in motion to ensure this is done. I therefore want to thank our amiable governor, His Excellency, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, our elder statesman, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR), the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Ondo State, Dr Banji Ajaka and other stakeholders who played wonderful roles to ensure this dream became a reality.”

Emphasizing the commitment of the President to the Health sector, Professor Ali-Pate said “President Tinubu is committed to changing the face of health management in the country. With this project, we can further build the health sector just as we are doing in the other sectors through our renewed hope agenda. This teaching hospital will no doubt help in training our medical students in studying and carrying out research activities in the sector to improve it. To the health workers that are going to work here I want to charge you that you put in your best to serving humanities. There are many trainees, specialists, pharmacists, nurses that will be trained here to make health care activities better here and all over the nation.”
Welcoming the minister and others, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Ajaka said “this is an epoch making event that closes all efforts put in place over the years. Many indigenes of Akure and Ondo state have all played roles behind the scenes to make this project a reality. I thank specially our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for giving the marching order to the ministry and by extension the state to make this project come into fruition. I also appreciate our governor, His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, a health-friendly person, whose tenure brought this luck to Akure and Ondo State, I thank Pa Reuben Fasoranti and our Kabiyesi the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladelusi and all other stakeholders for playing prominent roles to make today possible. We now handover this facility to the Federal Government for the use of FUTA. We are delighted to partner with FUTA, a reputable institution in Nigeria and globally and believe our partnership with the institution will continue to thrive.”

In a brief remark, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo gave kudos to President Tinubu for making the long awaited dream of Akure indigenes come to reality. He observed that Akure is the only city in the south west with a federal university with no teaching hospital. He said “Akure is lucky, Ondo state is lucky, we are all lucky. I appreciate our former governor, the Late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, (SAN), who built the edifice been handed over to the Federal Government. He also appreciated roles played by Pa Fasoranti, other elder statesmen and stakeholders for making the dream a reality.”

In a closing remarks, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami said “we expressed our deep appreciation to the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for approving a teaching hospital for Akure for the use of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. I also appreciate the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali-Pate and the entire staff of his ministry who worked tirelessly through constant visits to ensure we meet the standard and the realization of this project, and also our ministry of health under the watch of the Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka. I also specially appreciate our Kabiyesi, Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR) and his chiefs and all sons and daughters of Akure (home and abroad), especially our indefatigable Pa Fasoranti.”

Handing the documents to the Professor Ali-Pate, Dr. Adelami said “as I sign and handover this instrument of transfer to the Federal Government today, I do so with profound optimism and believe it’s not just a transfer of an asset but something that will bring a great development to Akure and environs and the whole country. I foresee a situation where this institution now under the Federal Government will become a globally recognized centre of medical excellence that will improve health care in Nigeria and beyond.”

The Vice Chancellor of FUTA Professor Adenike Oladiji described the development as epochal in the continuing strides of FUTA to continue its sterling contributions to the training and Production of critical manpower for national well-being and development 

The Pioneer Chief Medical Director,CMD Professor Olusegun Ojo , a Professor of Pathology at the Obafemi Awolowo University College of Health Sciences, Ile Ife and a Consultant Pathologist to the sister Teaching Hospital, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) whom The Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA appointed as Provost of its College of Health Sciences on 1st August 2024 , and appointed as the pioneer CMD of the new Teaching Hospital by the President , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was also at the occasion with some members of staff.

The beneficiary institution of the Teaching Hospital, the Federal University of Technology, Akure FUTA had a strong delegation to the event led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development, Professor Sunday Oluyamo. Others in his entourage were the Registrar, Mr Charles Adeleye; the Bursar, Mr Peter Osadugba, Deans and other top management staff.
