The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out chalkboards and introduce smart boards in all Nigerian schools by 2027.
Education Minister, Dr Olatunji Alausa, made this known during a ministerial roundtable in Abuja, stressing the government’s resolve to bridge the digital gap in the education sector.
Starting from 2026, the annual school census will be fully digital. According to Alausa, over 60,000 tablets have already been distributed to students in Adamawa, Oyo, and Katsina under the Airtech (AWS) and BESDA programmes, with an additional 30,000 expected soon.
He explained that smart boards will support interactive, technology-driven lessons, helping students learn through multimedia and digital engagement.
Alausa expressed concern over rising dropout rates, noting that out of 30 million pupils captured from 21 states on the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS), only six million reach senior secondary school.
He said the use of digitised data and student biometrics would enable evidence-based interventions and accurate tracking. Plans are also underway to integrate WAEC and JAMB data into NEMIS.
The minister appreciated UNICEF and President Bola Tinubu for their continued support of the initiative.
