Arrest Lagos NURTW Boss Sego for Threats Against APC Opponents, Obidient Movement Demands

On Friday, the Obidient Movement urged President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to detain and charge Adekunle Mustapha, also known as Sego, who is the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

It stated that Sego ought to be arrested and prosecuted for making threats to kill anyone who votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State during the 2027 election.

In response to a video of Sego making the threat, the movement stated that his actions are part of desperate tactics orchestrated by the APC. They claim this is because the party lacks both sufficient voting strength and popular support needed to secure victory in free and fair elections in Lagos State.

The Obidient Movement, through its National Coordinator Tanko Yunusa, issued a statement noting: "Our attention has been drawn to remarks made by Adekunle Mustapha, also known as Sego and the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers. These comments were well documented in a video."

In brief, Sego, who falsely presents himself as a Labour Union leader, issued threats to kill anyone voting against the APC in Lagos during the upcoming elections set for 2027.

The Obidient Movement reflects with sorrow on the violence inflicted by NURTW members and other thugs during the 2023 elections in Lagos. This brutality was directed towards Nigerian voters, especially those who were part of the Obidient Movement or supporters of Mr. Peter Obi and the Labour Party, leading to numerous casualties and injuries.

It is absolutely clear that these threats, along with acts of murder and robbery, are desperate attempts orchestrated by the APC. They recognize their lack of voting strength and popular support to secure a fair election victory in Lagos or across the country. This comes as no surprise given their failure to provide good governance following their questionable mandate from the 2023 elections.

For years, the NURTW in Lagos has been linked to and even seen as accepting actions such as murder, thuggery, political violence, extortion, and other criminal activities.

Through this statement, we urge President Bola Tinubu—who holds statutory and historical responsibility for this matter—as well as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Police, DSS, Military, and all other security agencies to take immediate action. Specifically, they should arrest, detain and prosecute the NURTW Chairman along with any others involved in these threats, murders and politically motivated criminal acts over an extended period.

Yunusa also drew the international community's attention to threats made by Sego.

He added, "We are alerting the International Community to these crimes against humanity and threats to peace in Nigeria, as well as those who bear legal responsibility through their actions or lack thereof."
