Innovation and technology took center stage in Kwara State as the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, unveiled its first locally engineered electric vehicle, named “OKIN EV1.”
The historic unveiling, which took place on campus, drew the attention of students, staff, community leaders, and government representatives, who described the project as a milestone in Nigeria’s quest for sustainable mobility.
Rector of the institution, Dr. Kamoru Kadiri, explained that the indigenous electric car was developed by the school’s team of engineers and researchers as part of efforts to promote renewable energy solutions and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
He emphasized that “OKIN EV1” is not only a product of technical innovation but also a testament to the creativity and resilience of Nigerian youths when given the right support and resources.
“This project represents our commitment to driving technological advancement in Kwara State and Nigeria at large. With continued government support and private sector partnerships, this initiative can be scaled up to contribute to job creation, climate sustainability, and national development,” the Rector said.
Stakeholders at the event praised the breakthrough, noting that the project aligns with the federal government’s vision of transitioning into cleaner energy alternatives.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who sent a representative, commended the Polytechnic for its pioneering role and pledged his administration’s readiness to support innovations that will place Kwara at the forefront of technological advancement in Nigeria.
The launch of “OKIN EV1” is expected to open opportunities for research collaborations, industry partnerships, and potential commercialization that could strengthen Kwara’s economy and inspire other institutions across the country.
