UN-Backed Report Confirms Famine in Gaza City for the First Time

A UN-backed organization responsible for monitoring food security has confirmed that famine has been declared in Gaza City for the first time.

According to the IPC, famine has been confirmed in the Gaza Governorate—encompassing Gaza City and its surrounding regions. "Catastrophic conditions" are expected to extend to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.

The organization does not officially declare the occurrence of a famine; instead, it offers analysis that enables governments, organizations, and agencies to make such declarations.

This follows an announcement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his cabinet has sanctioned new plans for an assault on Gaza City.

The IDF has advised medical personnel and international organizations to get ready for the planned evacuation of one million city residents to shelters in the south.

The UN has reported that escalating attacks and continuous bombardment in Gaza City are leading to a significant number of civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

The Israeli government restricts international news organizations, such as the BBC, from freely entering Gaza to report.
