Meet Unilag 2024 Overall best graduating student, Samuel Badekale who studied Cell biology and Genetics

....with perfect CGPA of 5.0
In an interview, he said he had tried Medicine twice before he changed the course the third time after a personal reflection on what he likes as a subject and not really about the dream to become a Doctor or what everyone wants to do.

Now, see how he shines. I have been seeing newspaper and blog stories about him since yesterday. I'm sure it's a proud moment for him.

He already got scholarship to three European Countries in Italy, France and Germany through the popular Erasmus Mundu Scholarship to research on Bio-membranes.

This is why the advice they give that whatever you find your hand doing, do it well comes helpful.

This is also why I don't like the rhetorics of demonizing any course. Yes some courses can get you jobs easily but for some smart students who sabi get As, can study anything, excel and build on it in Academics and Research. Which is not bad as career choices.

If you graduate with a First class in any course, your chances of getting scholarships abroad is high than others, which gives you opportunity to study more freely and possibly get jobs that pay better. We know many who went through this path and it makes life easier for them after school than the rest of us who narrowly escaped being battered by Uni grades.

I want to strongly urge us to encourage people to do well in whatever courses they are given in Uni . It saves time and helps their mental health too. Whoever still want to still pursue any other courses of choice can still do it, if age is still on their side and resources are still available.

It's not that people are not competent, but competition for scarce resources can be so keen. It's frustrating seeing High school graduates going through hell to study their dream courses. While we understand the reality of our predicament as a nation, we must encourage those that have spaces to give their best. Truly, God still rewards efforts.
