Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has initiated a significant crackdown on street beggars, scavengers, illegal vendors, "one chance" syndicates, and other suspected criminal activities throughout Abuja.
This was included in a statement signed on Wednesday by Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant for Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister.
The minister announced that the FCTA has initiated Operation Sweep Abuja Clean to eliminate public nuisances and restore order in the city.
Wike emphasized that the streets of Abuja are not meant for scavengers, beggars, or individuals engaged in criminal activities such as "one-chance" schemes and drug dealing.
According to the Abuja Environmental Protection Act and other applicable laws, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate removal of miscreants, street beggars and traders, scavengers, and other criminal elements from the Federal Capital Territory.
Our nation's capital ought to be a secure and proud symbol of beauty, rather than a place for street beggars and scavengers, many of whom may be associated with criminal activities.
To accomplish this, a Joint Task Force made up of security agencies and pertinent FCT SDAs has been dispatched to catch individuals found begging, scavenging, loitering, or involved in other activities harmful to the residents' well-being. Plans are in place to profile these individuals and transfer them back to their home state governments.
"Ensuring the safety of lives and property for residents in the FCT is a top priority for the government. We all need to work together to make Abuja safer," part of the statement reads.
The statement emphasizes that all individuals have a responsibility in ensuring the safety of their communities.
