Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has issued a warning against violence towards women. He emphasized that Islam opposes any form of such violence.
On Monday, he addressed a group of visitors from the Development Research and Project Center (dRPC) and the Center for Islamic Civilisation and Interfaith Dialogue (CICID) at his palace in Kano.
The team visited the palace as part of an initiative funded by the Ford Foundation, which aims to encourage Muslim religious leaders in northern Nigeria to actively oppose gender-based violence.
During the visit, Emir Sanusi stressed that it is essential for all traditional rulers within his jurisdiction to respect and uphold women's rights.
"I do not support the idea of beating women, and those who engage in such actions are not doing so to reform them," Sanusi stated.
"Today, we observe severe beatings and injuries inflicted on women under the guise of reform."
He clearly stated that any titleholder proven guilty of such actions would face the revocation of their traditional title.
Emir Sanusi's comments contribute to the continuous efforts of religious and community leaders in addressing harmful practices that are falsely presented as discipline or moral correction.
The emir emphasized that no justification can align violence with Islamic teachings.
