The U.S. government has launched an incentive program designed to motivate undocumented migrants to voluntarily return to their home countries, providing a free flight and a $1,000 stipend upon departure.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Harry Fones, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, revealed details about the initiative.
Fones emphasized the recent updates to the CBP One mobile application, which now allows undocumented individuals to coordinate their voluntary departure from the U.S.
He explained that individuals in the United States illegally can download and register on the CBP home app. Through this, the U.S. Government offers a complimentary flight back to their home country along with a $1,000 stipend upon confirmation of their departure from the United States.
He mentioned that the app enables users to register themselves as well as their children and other family members, all of whom qualify for the same benefits.
He explained, "For a family of four, for instance, they would receive a stipend totaling $4,000. Beyond this financial benefit is the advantage that it could maintain an opportunity for future reentry into the United States. On the other hand, if you are deported, returning to this country will not be possible."
Fones highlighted the administration's dedication to enforcing immigration laws and presented the app as a useful option for individuals who prefer to leave voluntarily.
"We are upholding the country's laws, with deportation being a priority for this administration."
He explained that the application has been revamped to enhance accessibility and user-friendliness.
