The Nigerian Senate has warned Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from Kogi Central, who is currently suspended, not to return to legislative sessions. They emphasized that she must remain away until her suspension concludes.
In a statement released on Sunday, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu stressed that there is currently no judicial order requiring the upper chamber to reinstate the senator ahead of schedule.
In March, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan faced suspension after a disagreement over seating arrangements evolved into accusations of sexual misconduct against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He has strongly refuted these allegations.
Referring to a decision made by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the senator recently announced her plan to resume participation in plenary on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
However, Adaramodu states that the Senate has a different interpretation of the court's decision. They argue it does not include any enforceable order mandating them to permit her return before the suspension period ends.
"It is, therefore, astonishing and without legal merit that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is trying to act on a nonexistent recall order while her appeal is pending and she has filed a motion to stay the valid orders against her," Adaramodu stated. "The Senate reiterates: no enforceable directive mandates her immediate return to the chamber."
He added a warning that if the lawmaker tried to forcibly enter Senate proceedings, it might be considered disruptive.
He added, "We urge the Distinguished Senator to avoid attempting to enter the Senate next Tuesday under false pretenses. Such actions would be premature and could compromise both the dignity of the Senate and due process."
The Senate, as an institution that adheres to the law, is dedicated to maintaining the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of its actions. It will not permit any disruptions during its proceedings.
The Senate plans to review the court's advisory opinions on its Standing Orders and the potential recall of a senator in due course. Once this assessment is complete, any decisions will be formally communicated to Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Adaramodu concluded by advising her to respectfully avoid the Senate chambers until due process has been fully completed.
