Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has revealed how he and other governors tried to make Wike the PDP presidential candidate but were blocked by party leaders.
Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has dropped a major revelation about the 2023 elections. Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Ortom said he and four other governors wanted Nyesom Wike to become the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate — but their plans were frustrated by powerful forces within the party.
The group, famously called the G5 Governors, included Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).
Ortom said, “We fought for a southern candidate and believed Wike was the best person. When he lost the primary, we pushed for him to be chosen as Atiku’s running mate. A 20-man committee was set up to recommend a VP, and 16 of us chose Wike — but the party leaders rejected it.”
He also added that politics is all about interest, not permanent enemies or friends. According to him, the selfishness of some party leaders made them ignore Wike, even when the majority wanted him.
“Everyone in politics is seeking their own interest and the interest of their people. When that interest is not protected, people find a new path,” Ortom said.
This shocking revelation sheds more light on the PDP crisis that followed the 2023 elections and why some governors stayed away from Atiku’s campaign rallies.
