Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has officially abolished the country’s electoral commission, arguing it is a drain on national resources and undermines state sovereignty.
According to state-run RTB TV, the Interior Ministry will now be responsible for managing elections. The move follows a series of sweeping reforms introduced by the junta since it took power in September 2022.
Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo defended the decision, saying the commission had been “subsidised with around $870,000 a year” and that scrapping it would “reinforce our sovereign control on the electoral process and at the same time limit foreign influences.”
A national vote that was due last year was postponed, and the transition to civilian rule has since been extended until July 2029—giving Traoré the opportunity to stay in power and even contest the next presidential election.
