"I lost my voice screaming on set" – Actress Azeezat Shorunmu shares emotional story behind her new voice

Nollywood actress and producer, Azeezat Shorunmu, has opened up about the tragic moment that permanently altered her voice and gave her the now-recognisable raspy tone fans know today.

In a heartfelt interview with Oyinmomo TV, Azeezat revealed that the change to her voice happened while filming a movie titled Apase. On the very first day of production, she got the shocking news that fellow actress, Mummy Surutu, had løst her child.

The emotional weight of the moment brøke her.

“I was confused. I didn’t know what to do,” she said. “She had already been paid to appear in the movie, but the news of her loss hit me so hard that I started shöuting. That was how I løst my voice.”

At first, she thought it was just a temporary issue — a blocked throat that would clear up in days. But weeks passed, then months. Four months later, her voice still hadn't returned to normal. That was when it dawned on her that something had gone tẹrríbly wrøng.

“I tried everything,” she said. “I used medication, spiritual intervention, even anointing oil. But by the time my voice returned, it was no longer mine. It came back tiny and cråcked.”

The actress admitted that the experience left her feeling helpless and frǔstrated.

“It’s painful when you want to express yourself and you can’t. I realised how hard it is to be voiceless.”
