Moments after former traditional priestess turned evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, her lawyer, Baffour Gyawu Bonsu Ashia, made a passionate appeal for clemency in the courtroom.
Addressing Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah of Circuit Court 10, Baffour implored the court to reconsider the weight of the custodial sentence, emphasising the impact it would have on Agradaa’s young children and her future ambitions.
“We humbly approach your mercy seat and, on bended knees, pray that you temper justice with mercy,” he pleaded, adding, “A custodial sentence may shatter the dream of this young lady who wants to be a lawyer.”
The lawyer highlighted that Agradaa’s last child is only three years old and still heavily reliant on maternal care and nurturing.
He suggested that the sentence, although within the court’s discretion, could have long-term emotional and social consequences for the child.
Agradaa was handed the 15-year sentence on Monday, following her conviction for defrauding members of the public by false pretence and engaging in what the court described as charlatanic advertisement.
