Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has launched a state-operated airline, Enugu Air. He hailed this initiative as a significant advancement for the state and an exemplary model of collaboration between the government and private sector.
The state-owned airline's first flight departed on Monday, which the governor described as a historic moment for 'Ndi Enugu'.
At the launch event, Mbah stated that this accomplishment aligns with his administration's vision to transform Enugu into a leading destination for investment, living, and tourism in Nigeria.
"It is a privilege to speak before you today, not just as your governor but also as someone who believes deeply in the power of vision," he stated.
Even though the launch occurred weeks after his administration's second anniversary, Mbah referred to it as "a fitting gift to Ndi Enugu."
He emphasized that Enugu Air was more than just an airline; it represented a courageous move towards creating the necessary conditions for business ventures and making previously inaccessible sectors attainable.
The governor stated, "From the start of our journey, we made no empty promises. One of our main objectives upon taking office was to transform Enugu into Nigeria's top destination for investments, living, and tourism. Today, we are clearly progressing towards that goal."
According to Mbah, the launch of Enugu Air demonstrated the potential outcomes that could arise from cultivating strategic public-private partnerships.
He stated, "Through our airline, we're unlocking opportunities in a sector that once seemed unattainable. Enugu Air has expanded the horizons of our aspirations, and today marks our inaugural flight together."
During his speech at the ceremony, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, addressed public concerns regarding the future of Enugu airport. He clarified that rather than being sold, the facility is set to be concessioned to private investors.
I've come across comments suggesting, "No, we are selling Enugu airport." However, we are actually concessioning it. This process has the backing of Mr. President, FAAN, the Ministry of Aviation, and National Assembly committees.
"We are currently transferring control of Enugu airport to private investors, who will enhance its operations and open up the facilities, including the cargo terminal," he stated.
Keyamo stated that the cargo terminal will greatly enhance economic activities in the region.
"You can now handle exports directly from the cargo terminal in Enugu, benefiting both local employment and the community. I felt it was important to highlight this today."
He commended Mbah for his proactive initiatives in drawing private investments to the airport, highlighting that the governor chose not to rely on bureaucracy to advance progress.
