A support group, Nigerian Youths for Atiku (NYFA), has stated that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar's departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) signifies the conclusion of an era in Nigeria.
NYFA's Director General, Mr. Dare Dada, expressed in a statement on Thursday in Lagos that Atiku’s choice to leave the PDP has significantly damaged the political and electoral prospects of the former ruling party.
Atiku, who served as the PDP presidential candidate in both 2019 and 2023, announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from the party due to irreconcilable differences within the former ruling group.
Although the former vice-president has not officially declared his switch to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he recently led a coalition of opposition leaders in announcing their decision to adopt the party as their platform for the 2027 general elections.
His departure from the PDP could indicate a willingness to strengthen connections with the ADC, especially since the NYFA leadership recently instructed its members nationwide to dismantle existing structures and register with ADC across different states.
In response to the situation, Dada remarked that Abubakar's resignation, along with other national leaders and members departing from the PDP to join forces with ADC, signaled the conclusion of an era for the former ruling party.
He believes that Abubakar has a significant base of supporters in both northern and southern political circles, encompassing youth, women, and professional groups.
The director-general remarked that the former vice-president had long been a pillar of support for the PDP, and his departure has significantly weakened and debilitated the party.
Considering the unfolding political events in the country, Dada announced that the group has directed its over 1.5 million members throughout all 36 states of the federation and the FCT to promptly resign from PDP.
The Nigerian Youth For Atiku group includes members from various parties, such as the PDP, NNPP, and LP.
Within our group, we also have non-partisan members from various sectors of the economy. They have all been encouraged to register as ADC members.
As a movement centered around revolutionary yoga, we have consistently championed good governance, accountability, and the promotion of strong democratic values.
“These attributes are essential in any democratic society that values transparency and economic prosperity,” he said.
He stated that the decision for Prof. Gold Emmanuel, the group's President and Founder, along with others, to resign from PDP was made in the best interest of the country as a whole.
He stated, "To prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state and civilian dictatorship, the dedication and effort of all Nigerians who firmly believe in a better future for the country are essential."
Dada encouraged Nigerians to stay united in combating hunger, poverty, and insecurity.
He stated, "We are unwavering in our commitment to mobilize over three million votes for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential elections."
